A record number of volunteers arrived at 7am on Sunday to Lions Park for the annual Clean Up Australia Day in Emu Park under the auspices of the local Lions Club. A comprehensive plan of attack, devised by coordinator Denis Ratcliffe saw people being dispatched to all point of the compass in cars, utes, trailers or on foot with gloves, sunscreen, hats and ample supplies of rubbish bags.

Members from ‘Bushcare’ swelled the numbers and a huge amount of rubbish was removed from our local environment. An analysis of the rubbish collected showed a decrease in bottles and cans etc probably as a result of the ‘Containers for Change’ initiative but of concern was an increase in the amount of old tyres illegally dumped.

At the conclusion of the event everyone enjoyed a sausage sizzle while Denis thanked all participants for their community spirit.

“There is still a lot more to be done so let’s make it even bigger next year” he said.

The next working bee will be to prepare and plant out new gardens in this same area of Lions Park as shown behind the people in the photograph.
